Sluggards Do Not Reap!

Sluggards Do Not Reap!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who plow in the autumn and reap a great harvest. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I know some farmers and others who have been around farming their whole lives. With years of experience, they know when to plant, how to use their equipment, how to increase the nutrients in the soil, and when to harvest. Their crop’s yields are higher than others who own nearby farms.

Those I know have times when they work very hard.

Proverbs 20:4 (ESV) is about a different kind of farmer.

“The sluggard does not plow in the autumn;
he will seek at harvest and have nothing.”

Unlike the farmers I know, this sluggard does not invest his time in preparing the soil, or planting seeds. What does the sluggard expect?

Solomon, says the sluggard will seek at harvest. It is odd how the expectation is high even though the field was never planted.

What can be learned from wise farmers and those like this one in Proverbs?

Work hard. Plow. Only then, expect higher yields.

Do Not Stray From Words of Knowledge!

Do Not Stray From Words of Knowledge!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who do not stray from the words of knowledge. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Some people are reluctant to take advice. Ever met one of these close-minded individuals?

Morally relativistic people believe there are no standards by which they can judge others. For these people, the Bible is no longer a standard to be believed and lived by.

Proverbs 19:27 (ESV) warns against ignoring godly instruction.

“Cease to hear instruction, my son,
and you will stray from the words of knowledge.”

It is very easy to get off track. Take a few minutes to read Scripture aloud.

Romans 10:17 (ESV) says,

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Listen to God’s word. Do not stray from the words of knowledge.

The Purpose of the Lord Will Stand!

The Purpose of the Lord Will Stand!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know the purpose of the Lord will stand. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Almost everyone makes plans. Families have vacation plans, financial plans, daily, weekly, and annual plans. In business, there are strategic plans, master plans, and more.

Proverbs 19:21 (ESV) is about man’s plans in light of the Lord’s purpose.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

Anything can happen to the plans a person has in their mind. In a moment, things can change. It is okay to dream and plan. Yet, always be mindful that the Lord is in control. His purpose will stand.

Listen to Advice; Accept Instruction!

Listen to Advice; Accept Instruction!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who listen to advice and accept instruction. In Jesus’ name, amen.

King Solomon repeats and idea that individuals need to listen to advice and accept instruction. That doesn’t mean from just anyone. Who one listens to and accepts instruction from makes all the difference. That is where discernment becomes essential.

The second part of the Proverb :19:20 (ESV) explains what the payoff is when someone listens and accepts the right advice and instruction.

“Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.”

Taking advice and instruction based on biblical principles will help any individual gain wisdom.

Search scripture for answers to life’s questions and problems.

Don’t Breathe Out Lies!

Don’t Breathe Out Lies!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who do not breathe out lies. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A person who testifies in a court of law is obligated to tell the truth. Knowingly lying under oath is a very serious offense called “perjury.”

Proverbs 19:9 (ESV) is about a false witness.

“A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who breathes out lies will perish.”

For those caught in the act of giving false testimony, there can be stiff penalties. In God’s economy the one who breathes out lies will perish.

Yet, God provides a way when there seems no way.

Change evil ways. Repent of lying. Make amends.

The Friend Who Sticks Close!

The Friend Who Sticks Close!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who have a friend who sticks close. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Some people are fair weather friends. These companions will be around when times are good, but will abandon when times turn bad or hard. Hopefully, you have friends that will go above and beyond and will be committed when difficulties arise.

Proverbs 18:24 (ESV) is about what can happened with a band of companions versus what can happen when a true friend will stand by.

“A man of many companions may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

Are you the kind of friend who sticks close?

Hopefully, you will avoid ruin, and have at least one good friend who will stick close.
