Thousands of Gold and Silver Pieces?

Thousands of Gold and Silver Pieces?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know the law of your mouth is better than thousands of gold and silver pieces. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Many have gone astray and been far from God. Now, some of those worst offenders keep God’s commandments. How can it be that God would be so gracious as to accept someone back into the fold who has been unfaithful? God forgives mistakes for those who are truly sorry for their transgressions.

Psalm 119:65-72 (ESV).

“You have dealt well with your servant,
O Lord, according to your word.
Teach me good judgment and knowledge,
for I believe in your commandments.
Before I was afflicted I went astray,
but now I keep your word.
You are good and do good;
teach me your statutes.
The insolent smear me with lies,
but with my whole heart I keep your precepts;
their heart is unfeeling like fat,
but I delight in your law.
It is good for me that I was afflicted,
that I might learn your statutes.
The law of your mouth is better to me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces.”

What is the value of God to you? Could that value be measured financially? Would you exchange your love of God for a bribe? A large bribe? The psalmist cannot be bought.

Plead for Favor?

Plead for Favor?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who plead for your favor with all their heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever disappoint someone, then try to make amends? Sometimes there is reconciliation.

Obedience to God’s law is not about earning favor by following rules, rather, it is about the condition of the person’s heart.

Psalm 119:57-64 (ESV) has the following phrases: “turn my feet to your testimonies,” “keep your commandments,” and “not forget your law.” The psalmist makes a choice to turn to God.

“The Lord is my portion;
I promise to keep your words.
I entreat your favor with all my heart;
be gracious to me according to your promise.
When I think on my ways,
I turn my feet to your testimonies;
I hasten and do not delay
to keep your commandments.
Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me,
I do not forget your law.
At midnight I rise to praise you,
because of your righteous rules.
I am a companion of all who fear you,
of those who keep your precepts.
The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
teach me your statutes!”

Do you relate to the psalmist? Will you make the same choice and turn to God with all your heart? Don’t hesitate. Have faith.

In The Night?

At Night?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who remember your name in the night and keep your law. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Fear. Anxiety. Worry. They often grow in the night. Nighttime can be especially terrifying for some people. Even believers can be overwhelmed at times.

In Psalm 119:54-56 (ESV) we learn the the psalmist thinks about the Lord at night.

“Your statutes have been my songs
in the house of my sojourning.
I remember your name in the night, O Lord,
and keep your law.
This blessing has fallen to me,
that I have kept your precepts.”

If you get overwhelmed in the night, remember the Lord. If there is a need to confess, do so. Pray. Follow God’s statues, laws, and precepts. Be aware of God’s blessings. Especially in the dark of night.

Take Comfort?

Take Comfort?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who take comfort because of your promises and rules. In Jesus’ name, amen.

With all the expectations, pains, responsibilities, and challenges, and tasks people have, most would welcome being able to take comfort in something. Anything.

God’s promise and his rules of old give the psalmist comfort as recorded in Psalm 119:49-53 (ESV).

“Remember your word to your servant,
in which you have made me hope.
This is my comfort in my affliction,
that your promise gives me life.
The insolent utterly deride me,
but I do not turn away from your law.
When I think of your rules from of old,
I take comfort, O Lord.
Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,
who forsake your law.”

Need comfort during the storms of life? It is time to return to God’s word. Take comfort that the words of Scripture are true and consistent.

Before Kings?

Before Kings?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who speak of your testimonies before kings, and who shall not be put to shame. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I wonder if the Apostle Paul thought about Psalm 119:46 (ESV) when he was standing before King Agrippa. The verse says,

“I will also speak of your testimonies before kings
and shall not be put to shame.”

Apostle Paul’s appearance before the king is recorded in Acts 26.

Look at verse 46 in context of Psalm 119:41-48 (ESV) where the psalmist declares his love for God’s commandments.

“Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord,
your salvation according to your promise;
then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me,
for I trust in your word.
And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
for my hope is in your rules.
I will keep your law continually,
forever and ever,
and I shall walk in a wide place,
for I have sought your precepts.
I will also speak of your testimonies before kings
and shall not be put to shame,
for I find my delight in your commandments,
which I love.
I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love,
and I will meditate on your statutes.”

Apostle Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3). He was privileged to speak to kings.

We may not be brought into the presence of kings, but it is possible there will be opportunities to speak of God’s testimonies before captains of business, CEOs, government officials, or anyone – great or small – open to hearing about the Gospel. If you find yourself in such a position, then share about all God has done. Be bold. God can protect you from being put to shame.

A Time for Reflection: Joseph J. Gould – A Friend Remembered

A Time for Reflection: Joseph J. Gould – A Friend Remembered.

The other day, I had breakfast with my friend, David. He gave me some pictures that brought back memories of a number of our friends and his father who now have passed away. We reminisced about the good old days. I mentioned I had written something right after his father had passed away in 2005. Well, I looked in my computer and found what I had written. This is a long overdue obituary for a man who encouraged me when I was growing up.

In 2005 I wrote the following:

Less than two hours ago, I learned of the death of a long-time friend. Knowing someone from age 16 until now has been great. It gives my life meaning to have spent time with Joe Gould. He was an example: He served in the U.S. military; and he was a Scout Leader for many years.

Through his contacts, I was able to find one of my first jobs; I started my work career on a Hollywood parking lot. (Knowing his sons helped.)

He encouraged me to create a speech for a competition at the Chinatown Optimist Club.  This man served as a life-long champion of youth and his community.

He was the founding owner of Hollywood National Bank. One time, when he was serving as an LA-area bank president for another bank, and I was working as a “headhunter.” He needed an employee to fill a spot as a branch manager. Although his criteria sounded impossible, he gave me a shot at filling the position, and, yes, I located the person he ultimately selected.

I still see him vibrant and alive: as husband of his beloved Dorothy, father to Marc (and his long-time girlfriend, Cindy) and David (and his wife, Deborah), as grandfather to Yona, D’ror (A.K.A. Justin) and Sarah, and as an uncle and relative of so many.

He was an incredible mentor and encourager. As a Boy Scouts of America leader he helped countless children as they grew into adulthood. He was active in the religious life of the Jewish community. He and his wife, together, were advocates of Soviet Jewry.

Additionally, it was through the gracious sponsorship of exchange students, coming in and out of the home from faraway places, I made other life-long friends. Although many friends and relatives I see only occasionally at family functions, I know this man was forever loved and respected.

I want to add my prayers to the many who are praying for the family at this time. May God bless, and keep all who morn this man’s passing.

When you think of the “good old days,” who comes to mind? Reach out to him or her and tell them what they mean to you. If they have passed, write something in memorial, and share with their loved ones.
