Cattle on a Thousand Hills?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know the Lord owns the cattle on a thousand hills. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When the psalms were written, some presumed that their sins would automatically be covered by the system of ritual sacrifices. The notes in the English Standard Version under Psalm 50 tell us it is impossible to buy off God.

Psalm 50:10-11 (ESV) makes clear God owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

“For every beast of the forest is mine,
the cattle on a thousand hills.
I know all the birds of the hills,
and all that moves in the field is mine.

In the end, Psalm 50:22-23(ESV) is about being shown the salvation of God.

‘Mark this, then, you who forget God,
lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!
The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;
to one who orders his way rightly
I will show the salvation of God!’”

Have a thankful heart whenever presenting offerings. Have a thankful heart in doing good works for the Lord. The right attitude makes a difference.

Filled with Righteousness?

Filled with Righteousness?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know God’s right hand is filled with righteousness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The notes for Psalm 48:9-11 in the English Standard Version explain, “Such reflections on God’s judgments, which display his righteousness (i.e. convent faithfulness), should lead the daughters (i.e. towns and villages) of Judah to rejoice.”

Psalm 48:9-11 (ESV) tells us of God’s love, righteousness, and rejoicing:

“We have thought on your steadfast love, O God,
in the midst of your temple.
As your name, O God,
so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is filled with righteousness.
Let Mount Zion be glad!
Let the daughters of Judah rejoice
because of your judgments!”

Imagine whole towns and villages rejoicing and praising God. Expect revival. Contribute by sharing about Jesus. Pray for the right person who will be willing to hear and for the right words to say.

God Known as a Fortress?

God Known as a Fortress?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who praise God he has made himself known as a fortress.

When we think of fortifications, we think of a place where people are protected. A fort is defensible against all who attack or lay siege. It is a place of safety. People inside are secure.

Psalm 48:1-3 says that God is to be praised – God has made himself known as a fortress.

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God!
His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation,
is the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
the city of the great King.
Within her citadels God
has made himself known as a fortress.”

Are you in need of a fortress? Seek him if you do not yet know him. Run to God for refuge. Pray. Now.

God Reigns?

God Reigns?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who highly exalt God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The name of the Lord is taken in vain in movies, on television, and in mass media.

God’s people are susceptible to corruption because men and women are consumers of the media that promulgates this abuse. It is a vicious circle. When will it stop? When the Lord returns.

Until then, consider the all-encompassing scope of God’s reign.

Psalm 47:8-9 (ESV) reminds the reader of who is really in control:

“God reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted!”

Remain humble in light of who God is. Maintain integrity when it comes to taking God’s name in vain. Remember he is the one who reigns. He knows. Exalt him!

Remember to Celebrate Veteran’s Day

Although I never served in the military, I have had the distinct pleasure to know and work with many veterans and active-duty members of the armed services.

For example, earlier this year, I posted information about my friend, Tom Foster, a retired Marine Corps Major. (A Friend Remembered)

Do you have veterans you know or have known?
I have been meeting at least twice a month for nearly twenty years with another friend who served in the United States Army.

At home is a picture of one of my wife’s relatives in his World War I uniform. My father-in-law served as a Marine and fought at Guadalcanal. My Uncle Jack fought in World War II in Europe. At the same time, my Uncle Johnny served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. My nephew retired from the Coast Guard. My sister and great niece worked at Veteran’s Administration hospitals.

When I taught a Political Science class at the Menifee Campus of Mount San Jacinto Community College in 1990, I invited a Pearl Harbor survivor to speak to the class. The talk left a lasting impression on the students and me.

As a professor of Speech Communications for Barstow Community College, I worked for seven years at Fort Irwin, the National Training Center for the United States Army. In that capacity, I taught soldiers and their dependents public speaking and writing skills.

Do the following to preserve the legacy of the veterans in your life. Thank veterans for their service. Encourage veterans to write their recollections for future generations. Consider making an audio or video recording of the veteran’s stories. Preserve scrap books, flags, and other mementos. Visit a museum to become familiar with the history.

King of all the Earth?

King of all the Earth?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who declare God is the king of all the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When a person performs well, bosses and colleagues can praise him or her for their success. When a student writes well, he or she may receive a top “A” grade. Then the teacher may write an affirming note praising the student on paper, or praise the student from the front of class.

Psalm 47:5-7 is about praising God:

“God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm!”

This psalm acknowledges God with praise. Do you do the same? Why not take a moment. Have a favorite praise song? Sing the song. Hum the song. Look it up on YouTube. Watch and listen. Praise God.
