Reviewed by Rebecca Farnbach, an historian and author of several books in the Images of America Series. Dennis Conrad’s Two-Cent Piece immediately engages a reader. We want to know about the two-cent piece. We know about two-dollar bills, but not two-cent pieces. Our hearts are touched by the kindness of the storekeeper and Anne’s eventual generosity as the family grapples with the sacrifices necessary to win the Civil War. While the story proceeds with examples of selflessness, small lessons are inserted to motivate the reader to exercise similar actions of faith and affirmation to trust in God. I highly recommend this sweet, honest book that will become a classic in children’s libraries.
Today, the words “In God We Trust” appear on our money, but this was not always the case. In 1864, during the Civil War – a time of great instability – the first two-cent pieces with the words “In God We Trust” began circulating. The story of Anne giving away her coins inspires children and adults to trust God. Given the world’s current instability, when readers trust God, they will be better prepared to deal with the issues of their generation.
