Work Hard!

Work Hard!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who work hard. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Proverbs 6:6-8 (ESV) is a well know proverb about ants.

“Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,
she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.”

Proverbs 10:5 (ESV), in contrast, is about a two people. One is industrious and the other is not.

“He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.”

Which of these two people do you aspire to be? The sluggard and “he who sleeps” seem to be very much alike. Pray and ask God to direct your paths. Be like the prudent son.

The Hand of the Diligent Makes Rich!

The Hand of the Diligent Makes Rich!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who have diligent hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Bruce Springsteen lyrics to Badlands tell us, “Poor men wanna be rich, and rich men wannna be king.”

Being poor can result from many causes. One is not working.

Proverbs 10:4 (ESV) has an important message about wealth.

“A slack hand causes poverty,
but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”

What is one thing you can do today that by doing it things will be better? Take action to do one thing after another. If in doubt about how to be diligent, learn from Scripture and from others. Avoid Wickedness!

Avoid Wickedness!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who avoid wickedness.

In the media and in real life the wicked seem to prosper. They seem to have all they want. Yet, scripture has a warning. There will come a time when fortunes reverse for those who are wicked.

In Proverbs 10:2-3 (ESV), God uses King Solomon to convey his message about the wicked. He contrasts the wicked with the righteous.

“Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
but righteousness delivers from death.
The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked”

Chose morality and virtue over evil. Ultimately, the wicked will not prosper.

Wise vs. Foolish Children!

Wise vs. Foolish Children!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those raising children.

Today, some parents tell their children they are proud of them. While decades ago, some parents did not praise their children because they thought the child would become prideful or worse.

Proverbs 10:1 (ESV) tells how parents can be affected by a wise son verses a foolish one.

“A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.”

Some children are starved for their parent’s approval. When a child does something right or well, consider telling him or her how proud you are. A father would be glad to have a wise child. How difficult it would be for the mother of a foolish child. Are you wise or foolish? If the latter, take corrective steps.

The Scoffer and the Wise Person

The Scoffer and the Wise Person

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who will reprove a wise person. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The synonyms for the word “reprove” include rebuke, scold, and reprimand.

The synonyms for the word “scoff” include jeer, jibe, sneer, poke, and insult.

Proverbs 9:7-12 (ESV) shows the difference between a scoffer and a wise person.

“Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
For by me your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life.
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
if you scoff, you alone will bear it.”

Which are you? Do you ever fall into the category of a scoffer? Or, are you willing to accept rebuke and criticism and change for the better?

Find Wisdom, Find Life, and Favor from the Lord!

Find Wisdom, Find Life, and Favor from the Lord!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for whoever finds wisdom finds life and finds favor from the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Proverbs 8:12 says,

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
and I find knowledge and discretion.”

Wisdom continues to be personified in Proverbs 8:32-36 (ESV) as though Wisdom is speaking because this section is in quotation marks.

“And now, O sons, listen to me:
blessed are those who keep my ways.
Hear instruction and be wise,
and do not neglect it.
Blessed is the one who listens to me,
watching daily at my gates,
waiting beside my doors.
For whoever finds me finds life
and obtains favor from the Lord,
but he who fails to find me injures himself;
all who hate me love death.”

What are you doing to seek wisdom? Given that this section of Scripture says, “Seek wisdom and find life,” persist in your quest.
