Praise God?

Praise God?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know the name of the Lord is to be praised. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Synonyms for the word “praise” include works like exultation, glorification, honor, crown, homage, devotion, worship, reverence, veneration, and adulation.

Psalm 113:1-3 (ESV) puts praising the Lord at forefront.

“Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!

Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is to be praised!”

Some people use the expression, “Praise the Lord” casually. Do you make a habit of praising God? Will knowing the synonyms change the way you think about what it means to praise the Lord? Reread the psalm. Spend some time praising the Lord!

Give Great Thanks?

Give Great Thanks?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who give great thanks to the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The early part of Psalm 109 says a lot about what the psalmist wishes would happen to his enemies. He does not hope the best for them.

By Psalm 109:30-31 (ESV), however, the psalmist is thankful.

“With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
I will praise him in the midst of the throng.
For he stands at the right hand of the needy one,
to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.”

Have you ever wanted to retaliate against those who oppose or oppress? Try a different approach. Spend time thanking God for his provision. Also, praise the Lord publicly.

Established the Lord’s Throne?

Established the Lord’s Throne?

Who or what can bless the Lord? The answer is his whole creation.

Psalm 103:19-22 (ESV) is specific about the Lord being blessed.

“The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.

Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word!
Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will!
Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

If the angels, the mighty ones, those who obey the voice of his word, the host, the ministers, who do his will, and all his works bless him, are you ready to join them? Go ahead and say, “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

God Chose Our Heritage?

God Chose Our Heritage?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who will shout to God with loud songs of joy. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 47 starts out with songs of joy. By the end, the psalmist is sharing about the heritage of the inhabitants of the Promised Land.

When looking at family pictures, especially wedding albums, there is usually at least one picture that shows multiple generations. Such a snapshot provides a frame of reference for family members to ponder. The family tree can include parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents. That is not to mention all the aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Psalm 47:1-4 tells us that God chose our heritage.

“Clap your hands, all peoples!
Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared,
a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah

When we think of our heritage, acknowledge God. Praise God if you have accepted Christ as Lord and savior. You are a child of God. Do as the Psalm says, “Clap your hands with loud songs of joy!”

Glory and Strength?

Glory and Strength?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who ascribe glory and strength to the Lord. In Jesus’ name.

The term ascribe means “to give credit to.”

In the case of Psalm 29:1-2, we learn what David, the psalmist, ascribes to the Lord. Moreover, the credit given to the Lord leads to worship.

“Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.”

Pondering the Lord’s glory and strength should give us pause. Are you in awe of holy God?

Praise his name.
