From the Ends of the Earth?

From the Ends of the Earth?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who call to you from the end of the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Many of the psalms are a desperate plea to get God’s attention. God is responsive, but not always the way we hope or expect.

In Psalm 61:1-4 (ESV) David, the psalmist, is crying out and calling to god. He knows God has the power to protect him. God has been faithful in the past.

“Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.

Let me dwell in your tent forever!
Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah.”

Do you want God to hear your plea? Have confidence. God was a refuge for the psalmist. Trust he will be the same for you.

God Known as a Fortress?

God Known as a Fortress?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who praise God he has made himself known as a fortress.

When we think of fortifications, we think of a place where people are protected. A fort is defensible against all who attack or lay siege. It is a place of safety. People inside are secure.

Psalm 48:1-3 says that God is to be praised – God has made himself known as a fortress.

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God!
His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation,
is the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
the city of the great King.
Within her citadels God
has made himself known as a fortress.”

Are you in need of a fortress? Seek him if you do not yet know him. Run to God for refuge. Pray. Now.

Salvation of the Righteous?

Salvation of the Righteous?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who the Lord helps and delivers. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The psalms are filled with many recurring themes. One has to do with the conflict between the wicked and the righteous. The wicked are subject to the Lord’s judgement. The righteous are saved because they trust in the Lord.

The two verses of Psalm 37:39-40 (ESV) are the culmination of a psalm where the righteous are reminded they should fret not:

“The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.”

The righteous have a special relationship with the Lord. He on their side.

A Place of Refuge?

A Place of Refuge?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know the Lord is a stronghold in times of trouble. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The word stronghold is used in scripture two ways. One use of stronghold refers to “Satan’s grip.” In contrast, one psalmist uses stronghold to mean “a place of refuge.”

Psalm 9:9-10 (ESV) used the latter meaning:

“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.”

There are those who trust in the Lord and those who do not. There those who seek God and those who do not. God is a stronghold for those who trust and those who seek him.

Trust. Seek. Find rest in The Lord.

Take Refuge and Rejoice?

Take Refuge and Rejoice?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who take refuge in you and rejoice. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The psalmist urges rejoicing for those who find sanctuary in the Lord’s protection. The words of Psalm 5:11-12 (ESV) offer hope:

“But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover him with favor as with a shield.”

These verses describes God’s protection and combine it with singing and honoring God. Do likewise.
