Heart and Flesh Sing for Joy?

Heart and Flesh Sing for Joy?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those whose heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Imagine a group of believers singing for joy in church.
In contrast, imagine a stadium filled with people singing along with the-latest-and-greatest popular, secular musicians.

Both may make pleasant melodies, but those worshiping God have a spiritual component those in the secular stadium are missing.

In Psalm 84:1-4 (ESV) the psalmist says his heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.

“How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.

Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever singing your praise! Selah

Are you as dedicated as the psalmist? Does your heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God? Why? Or why not? Do you know the living God? If not, read The Four Spiritual Laws.

No Other Gods Means No Other Gods?

No Other Gods Means No Other Gods?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know they should have no other gods before you. In Jesus name, amen.

The first commandment is clear. Consider Exodus 20:3-4:

“‘You shall have no other gods before me.

“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.’”

In Psalm 81:8-9 the psalmist is reiterating that God will not tolerate false gods. Yet, the people of Israel at the time were very stubborn and wanted follow their own path.

“Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.”

Have you bowed to false gods in your life? Has some possession become more important than God? Has striving to achieve some goal become a higher priority than serving God?

Don’t be dismayed. God will forgive if you repent. Perhaps it is time someone said welcome home to all those who need to remove all other gods from their life. Prioritize.

That We May Be Saved?

That We May Be Saved?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who pray for restoration and that we may be saved. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The psalmist in Psalm 80 (ESV) the psalmist repeats an almost identical refrain in verses 3, 7, and 19.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!”

Verse 18 of the same Psalm responds to God and calls out to him.

“Then we shall not turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call upon your name!”

Immediately following this verse, the earlier refrain is repeated.

Repeat out loud the words of verses 3, 7, and 19. Trust God to restore and save.

Teach Your Children Well?

Teach Your Children Well?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who do not hide the glorious deeds of the Lord from their children. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have you passed down any stories to the next generation? Over time, stories can change. Not so with scripture. Scribes and others who transcribed scripture had incredible attention to detail. In Israel, the Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls including the Isaiah Scroll. The museum is one way Scripture is preserved and communicated to future generations.

The author of Psalm 78:1-8 (ESV) emphasizes the importance of sharing with children the glorious deeds of the Lord.

“Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.

He established a testimony in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God,
but keep his commandments;
and that they should not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
whose spirit was not faithful to God.”

Pass what you know about the Bible and God on to the next generation. Feel less than inadequate? Research, then share what you learn. Pray and share your personal testimony of what God has done in your life. You will be glad you did.

Meditate on God’s Mighty Deeds?

Meditate on God’s Mighty Deeds?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for all those who remember your wonders of old and meditate on your mighty deeds. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God is in the miracle business. When we think of all the signs and wonders in Egypt before pharaoh set the people free, there are many amazements to behold. Once the Israelites were out of captivity, those miracles thta took place in both the desert and upon entering the Promised Land were passed down through the generations.

In Psalm 77:11-15 (ESV) the psalmist says he will meditate on God’s mighty deeds.

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
I will ponder all your work,
and meditate on your mighty deeds.
Your way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?
You are the God who works wonders;
you have made known your might among the peoples.
You with your arm redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

Think of all of God’s mighty deeds and meditate on one.

Save All the Humble?

Save All the Humble?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who realize you establish judgment to save all the humble of the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The people of Israel angered God by worshiping false gods, breaking his commandments, and more.

The notes to the English Standard Version of the Bible concerning the phrase “to save all the humble of the earth” refers to saving “the faithful among his people.”

In Psalm 76:7-9 the psalmist expresses a healthy respect for God’s anger and subsequent judgment.

“But you, you are to be feared!
Who can stand before you
when once your anger is roused?
From the heavens you uttered judgment;
the earth feared and was still,
when God arose to establish judgment,
to save all the humble of the earth. Selah

God has the authority to judge. Do you need to repent and turn away from the sin in your life? Pray. In John 8:11 (ESV) Jesus told a woman caught in the act of adultery to “‘go, and from now on sin no more.’”
