Tend the Field or Build the House?

Tend the Field or Build the House?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom to know sound advice when I see it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Discerning what is most important and then making wise decisions is not always easy.

Some people have a hard time prioritizing.

Proverbs 24:27 (ESV) helps set the proper of order of work when faced with a specific situation.

“Prepare your work outside;
get everything ready for yourself in the field,
and after that build your house.”

A person may be tempted to build their house first. Yet, the person who neglects his field in the mean time, might find there is no food come time for harvest.

Honor Parents!

Honor Parents!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for children, so they can have good relationships with their parents.

The notes in the English Standard Version of the Bible under Proverbs 22-25 tell us: “Saying Sixteen. Acquiring wisdom is a duty in that it is the best way one can fulfill the command to honor one’s parents.”

This accounts for the idea of buying truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

Proverbs 23:22-25 (ESV) deals with the dynamic relationship between parents and their children.

“Listen to your father who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Buy truth, and do not sell it;
buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;
he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.
Let your father and mother be glad;
let her who bore you rejoice.”

Honoring parents is mentioned as the fifth in the Ten Commandments. How is it, this command is ignored my many in modern society?

Take a step closer to following God’s preferred way, and do something today to honor parents.

Seeking to Acquire Wealth?

Seeking to Acquire Wealth?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who desire to acquire wealth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Some people become obsessed with obtaining wealth. Are you one of those workaholic types who will strive hard to earn more and more money?

Proverbs 23:4 (ESV) warns people who are so inclined.

“Do not toil to acquire wealth;
be discerning enough to desist.
When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.”

Modernly, some people sacrifice family life on the altar of wealth accumulation. Don’t be deceived. Wealth can be fleeting. Don’t let materialism become your god.

Rather, focus on the things of God and his kingdom.

No Co-Signing!

No Co-Signing!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are asked to co-sign for loans. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Scripture recommends against promising to pay back someone else’s financial obligations.

Imagine a person co-signs for the purchase of a car. If the person who asked for the co-signer fails to make the payments, the bank or dealership that made the loan will expect the co-singer to pay back the debt.

Solomon in Proverbs 22:26-27 (ESV) gives fair warning to everyone who would consider making a pledge to repay another’s debt.

“Be not one of those who give pledges,
who put up security for debts.
If you have nothing with which to pay,
why should your bed be taken from under you?”

Don’t take the chance.

Avoid putting up security, including anything you own, as a guarantee for someone else to repay a debt. The risk is, if the person doesn’t pay their debt, what you pledged can be taken.

Be wise. If asked to pledge anything of value, so another person can borrow money or purchase something, tell the person, “No.”

Trust, Incline, Hear, and Apply!

Trust, Incline, Hear, and Apply!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who put their trust in you. In Jesus’ amen.

King Solomon reiterates a person should put their trust in the Lord.

Proverbs 22:17-19 (ESV) uses vivid language when telling readers what to do. “Incline.” “Hear.” and “Apply.” He also uses the words, “keep,” and “ready.”

“Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise,
and apply your heart to my knowledge,
for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
if all of them are ready on your lips.
That your trust may be in the Lord,
I have made them known to you today, even to you.”

Decide to trust in the Lord. From now on, follow his ways as described in this section of Scripture.

Ready for the Day of Battle!

Ready for the Day of Battle!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who prepare for the day of battle. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Bible is filled with stories of war.

Preparation for battle required a warrior to do certain things in anticipation of armed conflict.

Proverbs 21:31 (ESV) helps us see clearly who is in control.

“The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but the victory belongs to the Lord.”

No matter how brilliantly a horseman may fight, it is not his to claim credit for a battlefield victory. Do you ever try to take credit for the victories in your life? Remember this proverb. “The victory belongs to the Lord”.
