The Name of the Lord?

The Name of the Lord?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know their help is in the name of the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have you ever felt ganged up on? If not, imagine what it is like when no one is on your side. Standing alone can be scary. Yet, when a person has emotional and physical support, they can feel confident.

We learn from Psalm 124:1-8 (ESV), God was on the side of his people. But for God, the people would have been overwhelmed.

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
let Israel now say—
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
when people rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
when their anger was kindled against us;
then the flood would have swept us away,
the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone
the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
who has not given us
as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird
from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
and we have escaped!

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.”

When the Lord was on their side, Israel was victorious. The Lord was present at the time of need. The people were not swallowed up alive. The flood was kept away. The people were not covered with a torrent of raging waters. They were not swept away. It is like they escaped the fowler’s snare.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

From Where Does My help Come?

From Where Does My help Come?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who say, “My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” In Jesus’ name, amen.

Years ago, I visited the Ronald Regan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. During the visit, I saw President Regan’s Bible open to Psalm 121.

Psalm 121:1-3 (ESV) asks and answers the question, “From where does my help come?”

“I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.”

Psalm 121 must have been a comfort to President and Mrs. Regan. Let it comfort you too.

He Comes in the Name of the Lord?

He Comes in the Name of the Lord?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 118:26 (ESV) says,

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We bless you from the house of the Lord.”

The words in the first part of the verse appear several times in the New Testament. Palm Sunday the phrase was used together with shouts of “Hosanna.” (See Matthew 21:9 and Mark 11:9).

Luke 19:38 (ESV) says,
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

John 12:13 and Luke 13:35 also use Psalm 118:26.

Imagine being on the road into Jerusalem when Jesus is welcomed by the crowds shouting the words of Psalm 118:26. Join with them now, and say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Songs of Salvation?

Songs of Salvation?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who sing glad songs of salvation. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Sing of redemption and deliverance. God can do amazing things.

The word “valiantly” in the following verses has many synonyms including bravely, courageously, fearlessly, and nobly.

Psalm 118:14-16 (ESV) is about song, salvation, and the right hand of the Lord.

“The Lord is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.
Glad songs of salvation
are in the tents of the righteous:
‘The right hand of the Lord does valiantly,
the right hand of the Lord exalts,
the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!’”

When a crisis comes, it may be time to pull out a hymnal and start to sing. Or rely on your musical memory. So praise and sing glad songs.

What Can Man Do To Me?

What Can Man Do To Me?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who say, “I will not fear. What can man do to me?” In Jesus’ name, amen.

Fear can paralyze a person to inaction. Fear can also keep a person awake at night. Anyone can go through a season of panic and anxiety.

The cure for these things is God’s word where it says, “The Lord is on my side.”

Psalm 118:5-9 (ESV) explains that God can answer us personally and set us free.

“Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
The Lord is on my side as my helper;
I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in princes.”

Where is it you go when you need to take refuge from panic and anxiety? Where it you run when afraid? The answer to both is these questions is to trust in the Lord and realize he is on your side.

Faithfulness of God?

Faithfulness of God?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom, for your faithfulness endures forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 117 (ESV) has just two verses. These verses are packed with a message of praise, honor, God’s love, and his faithfulness forever.

“Praise the Lord, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!”

Won’t you praise the Lord, and extol him? Praise him!
