Do You Know Someone Lacking Sense?

Do You Know Someone Lacking Sense?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are Lacking Sense. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What are the tell-tale signs of neglect?

Years ago, there was a university study conducted in a major city in the South. The researcher looked at the condition of birdbaths throughout the city. The study found there was a statistical correlation between a family in distress with the poor condition of the family’s birdbath. Well maintained birdbaths more likely showed stability in the home.

Proverbs 24:30-34 (ESV) shares King Solomon’s observation of what might at one time have been a thriving piece of land.

“I passed by the field of a sluggard,
by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,
and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns;
the ground was covered with nettles,
and its stone wall was broken down.
Then I saw and considered it;
I looked and received instruction.
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.”

Let this be fair warning. Avoid the habits of those who don’t want to work. Have a property in serious disrepair?

What Do I Do First, Tend the Field or Build the House?

What Do I Do First, Tend the Field or Build the House?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom to know sound advice when I see it. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Discerning what is most important and then making wise decisions is not always easy.

Some people have a hard time prioritizing.

Proverbs 24:27 (ESV) helps set the proper of order of work when faced with a specific situation.

“Prepare your work outside;
get everything ready for yourself in the field,
and after that build your house.”

A person may be tempted to build their house first. Yet, the person who neglects his field in the mean time, might find there is no food come harvest time.

How Are Wisdom and Honey Connected?

How Are Wisdom and Honey Connected?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know wisdom is honey to the soul. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Perhaps you have a favorite memory of the taste of honey. On a freshly baked biscuit? All by itself?

In Proverb 24:13-14 (ESV) wisdom and honey form a bond.

“My son, eat honey, for it is good,
and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
if you find it, there will be a future,
and your hope will not be cut off.”

Have you given the search for and acquisition of wisdom the importance it deserves?

Note the words, “If you find it.”

This implies there are those who search but never find wisdom.

Don’t be one who searches and never finds wisdom. God’s Word, the Bible, contains wisdom. Search for wisdom there. Finding it will be sweet.

Are You Seeking to Acquire Wealth?

Are You Seeking to Acquire Wealth?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who desire to acquire wealth. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Some people become obsessed with obtaining wealth. Are you one of those workaholic types who will strive hard to earn more and more money?

Proverbs 23:4 (ESV) warns people who are so inclined.

“Do not toil to acquire wealth;
be discerning enough to desist.
When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.”

Modernly, some people sacrifice family life on the altar of wealth accumulation. Don’t be deceived. Wealth can be fleeting. Don’t let materialism become your god.

Rather, focus on the things of God and his kingdom.

Is It Important to Honor Your Parents?

Is It Important to Honor Your Parents?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for children, so they will honor their parents. In Jesus’s name, amen.

The notes in the English Standard Version of the Bible under Proverbs 22-25 tell us: “Saying Sixteen. Acquiring wisdom is a duty in that it is the best way one can fulfill the command to honor one’s parents.”

Proverbs 23:22-25 (ESV) deals with the dynamic relationship between parents and their children.

“Listen to your father who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Buy truth, and do not sell it;
buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;
he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.
Let your father and mother be glad;
let her who bore you rejoice.”

Honoring parents is the fifth of the Ten Commandments. Yet, this command is ignored by many in modern society.

Take a step closer to following God’s preferred plan, and do something to honor your parents today.

Are You Ready to Trust, Incline, Hear, and Apply?

Are You Ready to Trust, Incline, Hear, and Apply?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who put their trust in you. In Jesus’s name, amen.

King Solomon reiterates a person should put their trust in the Lord.

Proverbs 22:17-19 (ESV) uses vivid language when telling readers what to do. “Incline,” “hear,” and “apply.” He also uses the words, “keep” and “ready.”

“Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise,
and apply your heart to my knowledge,
for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
if all of them are ready on your lips.
That your trust may be in the Lord,
I have made them known to you today, even to you.”

Decide to trust in the Lord. From now on, follow his ways as described in this section of Scripture.
