The Earth be Filled with Your Glory?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who pray like the psalmist, David, “May the whole earth be filled with your glory.” In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 72 is David’s prayer to God.

He concludes his prayer in the last verses of Psalm 72:17-20 (ESV):

“May his name endure forever,
his fame continue as long as the sun!
May people be blessed in him,
all nations call him blessed!

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.
Blessed be his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory!
Amen and Amen!

The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended.”

Can this last part of David’s prayer be an example for us today? David humbles himself. His prayer points others to God. God is the focus. Praise him. Now.

Sinking in the Mire?

Sinking in the Mire?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who feel like they are sinking in the mire. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever felt like you are sinking? Sinking deep into the mire? Some people find themselves in circumstances that seem hopeless.

Don Moen wrote a song, “God Will Make a Way.” The words are as follows:

“God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me”

David, the psalmist, asks God to make a way for him in Psalm 69:13-15 (ESV):

“But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
Deliver me
from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
and from the deep waters.
Let not the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or the pit close its mouth over me.”

David is praising God by the end of the psalm. Feel like all is lost? Stop.
Take a moment. Pray. Praise God for his provision.

In Deep Waters?

In Deep Waters?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who struggle to stay afloat in deep waters. In Jesus name, amen.

Ever been in deep water? If a person is not a swimmer, deep water can mean deep trouble.

Being in an ocean or a pool and being unable to touch bottom can be harrowing.

Along with the psalmist, David, in Psalm 69:1-3 (ESV) follow the metaphor, and visualize how he is about to overwhelmed by deep waters (i.e. the enemies and forces aligned against him).

“Save me, O God!
For the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
I am weary with my crying out;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God.”

Drowning in a crisis? Seemingly without help? Impossible to stay afloat? God can save you. Trust him to do so. Do like David did. Cry out, “Save me, O God!”

Awesome God?

Awesome God?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know you are an awesome God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The words of Rich Mulins’ chorus from the song “Awesome God” are as follows:

Our God is an awesome God.
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God.

Psalm 68:32-35 (ESV) proclaims, “Awesome is God.”

“O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God;
sing praises to the Lord, Selah
to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens;
behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice.
Ascribe power to God,
whose majesty is over Israel,
and whose power is in the skies.
Awesome is God from his sanctuary;
the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people.
Blessed be God!”

Never forget. Whatever the time of year and whatever the circumstance, worship the almighty. Ponder the awesomeness of God who created the universe and sent his son, Jesus Christ. Be filled with the Spirit, and share with others who do not know about Christ’s power to save.

God Bears Us Up?

God Bears Us Up?

Dear Lord, I pay for wisdom for those who realize it is the Lord who daily bears us up. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:28 (ESV), “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The notes in the English Standard Version explains that the word “us” in Psalm 68:19-20 (ESV) refers to Israel. “Salvation” in the verse refers to protection from enemies, which means military victories over them:

“Blessed be the Lord,
who daily bears us up;
God is our salvation. Selah
Our God is a God of salvation,
and to God, the Lord, belong deliverances from death.”

Although the context of this verse may be Ancient Israel, the ideas of blessed be the Lord and God providing salvation—even if it is a military victory—gives us hope. The psalmist knows God is involved in the daily lives of God’s people.

When enemies swarm against you, won’t you ask God to bear you up? Praise him for his deliverance from death via the cross.

Kings Will Bear Gifts?

Kings Will Bear Gifts?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know kings will bear gifts to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The story of God’s power goes back to the time of creation.

David, the psalmist, in Psalm 68:28-29 (ESV) appeals God to use his power. Moreover, David knows the Temple at Jerusalem provides a testimony to the greatness of the God of Israel, so much so, kings will bear gifts.

“Summon your power, O God,
the power, O God, by which you have worked for us.
Because of your temple at Jerusalem
kings shall bear gifts to you.”

Today, God has power. A person can be reborn a new creation. (See the story of Nicodemus in John 3:1-5). If you are king or not, will you bear gifts to God?
