Those Who Are Humble!

Those Who Are Humble!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are humble. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A person with humility can be said to have an unassuming nature.

The relationship between God and men and women is a topic worthy of endless discussion, but once people understand how almighty and powerful God is and how limited we men and women are, then it is possible to realize God is God and we need to be humble in his presence.

Proverbs 15:33 (ESV) is about instruction in wisdom and how humility comes before honor.

“The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.”

Won’t you put in perspective God’s power, and humbly come before him with praise and adoration?

Life-giving Reproof!

Life-giving Reproof!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who listen to life-giving reproof. In Jesus’ name, amen.

According to dictionary.com, reproof means “the act of reproving, censuring or rebuking.”

Ever been told you should not be doing something? As adults, this can lead to more than just hard feelings. Not everyone is so inclined to change behavior after being rebuked.

Proverbs 15:31-32 (ESV) addresses is those who are willing to change after God’s reproof.

”The ear that listens to life-giving reproof
will dwell among the wise.
Whoever ignores instruction despises himself,
but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.”

Notice the impact of listening to and changing behavior in response to the reproof: dwelling among the wise and gaining intelligence.

Have Many Advisers!

Have Many Advisers!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who seek counsel.

Some individuals believe they have all the answers. When it comes to making wise decisions, these people would never think to ask God. Rather they rely on their own understanding. This is the opposite of what it says in Proverb 3:6 (ESV).

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 15:22 (ESV) is about what happens with and without counselors and advisers.

“Without counsel plans fail,
but with many advisers they succeed.”

Be wise. Acknowledge God. Have many advisers.

Be Slow To Anger!

Be Slow To Anger!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are slow to anger. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever been around someone who has angry outbursts? It can be more than intimidating.

Some abusive relationships involve hot-tempered individuals.

Proverbs 15:18 (ESV) contrasts the hot-tempered person with one who is slow to anger.

“A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,
but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.”

The old adage said, “If you are angry, count to ten before taking any action.”

If you have been hot-tempered in the past, realize the advantages to being slow to anger. Pray and ask God to bring about a change.

A Soft Word Turns Away Wrath!

A Soft Word Turns Away Wrath!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know a soft word turns away wrath. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I was just watching TBN. Mike Rowe was the subject to the show because he has a podcast The Way I Heard It. The episode was about Bob Ross. TBN had turned the podcast into a video. Few people know that Bob Ross had been a drill sergeant before he became famous for teaching painting on PBS. After years of yelling at troops, he became well-known for his soft-spoken manner.

Proverbs 15:1 (ESV) was quoted during the broadcast.

“A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

What is your preference? A soft answer? Harsh words? Choose wisely.

If you have been known for harsh words, change and become known for your soft answers.

Avoid Backsliding!

Avoid Backsliding!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who do not want to backslide. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Those who backslide revert to sin.

In an article on Crosswalk.com, “What it Means to Backslide and How to Recover,” Dr. Roger Barrier defines “‘backsliding’ as an interruption or step backward in our spiritual growth.”

Solomon, in Proverbs 14:14 (ESV), uses parallel language when describing the backslider and the good man.

“The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways,
and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.”

Avoid temptation.

Which kind of fruit do you want?

If you have backslidden, repent.

James 4:8 (ESV) says,

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands,
you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

If you are a believer, draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
