Ants, Rock Badgers, Locusts, and Lizards!

Ants, Rock Badgers, Locusts, and Lizards!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who pay attention to the world around them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Who would think that ants, rock badgers, locusts, and lizards would find their way into King Solomon’s Proverbs?

Proverbs 30:24-28 (ESV) shows King Solomon’s ability as an observer and his wisdom.

“Four things on earth are small,
but they are exceedingly wise:
the ants are a people not strong,
yet they provide their food in the summer;
the rock badgers are a people not mighty,
yet they make their homes in the cliffs;
the locusts have no king,
yet all of them march in rank;
the lizard you can take in your hands,
yet it is in kings’ palaces.”

Is it time you paid greater attention to what is around you?

Take a while this week and think deeply about what lessons can be learned from nature.

Shield and Refuge!

Shield and Refuge!

Dear Lord, I pray for those to know you are a shield and a refuge. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 91:2 (ESV) says,

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress:
my God; in him will I trust.”

Proverbs 30:5-6 (ESV) compliments the sentiment, and it is about the truth of God’s word and how he is a refuge.

“Every word of God proves true;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words,
lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.”

The Bible is God’s holy and inspired word.

Scripture gives fair warning. Beware of adding to God’s word.

Humiliation or Honor?

Humiliation or Honor?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are humble. In Jesus’ name amen.

Proverbs 29:23 (ESV) draws a stark contrast.

“One’s pride will bring him low,
but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”

The notes to Proverbs 29:23 in the English Standard Version of the Bible say, “Paradoxically, pride brings humiliation while humility bring honor.”

Micah 6:8 (ESV) says,

“He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”

Let God direct your paths, and remain humble.

Stir Up Strife?

Stir Up Strife?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are dealing with people who stir up strife and are angry. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Imagine living with a person who makes comments designed to provoke others and incite conflict. Now add being around a person who has angry outbursts and violent behavior. Life can become unbearable.

Proverbs 29:22 (ESV) describes individuals with these characteristics and the results.

“A man of wrath stirs up strife,
and one given to anger causes much transgression.”

Those who make others suffer, as the proverb describes, can change.

John Newton, the author of “Amazing Grace,” knew sinners could change from firsthand experience. He wrote “That saved a wretch like me.”

Hasty Words!

Hasty Words!

Dear Lord, I pray for those who think before they speak. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever regret having said something?

Most people can think of a time when they wish they could take back their words.

Once uttered, words convey a message. Sincere apologies may not be able to erase the harm done by a hasty comment.

Proverbs 29:20 (ESV) is about a man whose quick comments get him into trouble.

“Do you see a man who is hasty in his words?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.”

This proverb is reminiscent of the adage, “Think before you speak.”

Guard your words. Don’t become less than a fool.

Rejoice or Groan?

Rejoice or Groan?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for people who rejoice because the righteous increase. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When totalitarian dictators and other oppressive leaders come to power, those living under these regimes cry out for relief.

Proverbs 29:2 (ESV) describes what happens when the wicked rule.

“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
but when the wicked rule, the people groan.”

In a democracy, it is vital that righteous people’s voices are heard.

Who gets in power will determine if the people rejoice or if they groan.
