Do You Sing Your Own Praises?

Do You Sing Your Own Praises?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who receive genuine compliments and praise from others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Television commercials often include a famous person endorsing a product or service.

Proverbs 27:2 (ESV) is not about goods and services. Rather, it is about others praising you personally.

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
a stranger, and not your own lips.”

Don’t brag about your accomplishments, nor say how great you are.

When others pay compliments, graciously accept the praise. But keep in mind who will get the ultimate glory for all you do and say. It is the Lord God, Almighty.

Do You Believe in Having Many Counselors?

Do You Believe in Having Many Counselors?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know that in the abundance of counselors there is victory. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Those who surround themselves with wise people can tap into their experience and background for information and guidance. This is especially true when the wise people have a firm foundation of faith based on God’s holy and inspired word.

Proverbs 24:3-7 (ESV) is about more than just building a house. It is about harnessing wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.

“By wisdom a house is built,
and by understanding it is established;
by knowledge the rooms are filled
with all precious and pleasant riches.
A wise man is full of strength,
and a man of knowledge enhances his might,
for by wise guidance you can wage your war,
and in abundance of counselors there is victory.
Wisdom is too high for a fool;
in the gate he does not open his mouth.”

Find wise people who will give you sound advice. Check and double check with other wise counselors, and then take action.

Why Should You Beware of the Way of Death?

Why Should You Beware of the Way of Death?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those whose way seems right, but its end is the way to death. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Have you ever seen a person who is so headstrong that they know their plan could never fail, yet their plan is flawed? It is time to put plans under the microscope, and recognize bad plans for what they are.

Proverbs 16:25 (ESV) is an example a man’s scheme gone wrong.

“There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.”

Don’t make a mistake. What may look very appealing may be fraught with danger.

Think through the implications of decisions.

Don’t always assume everything will work out. Rather, look at situations with a critical eye from God’s perspective.

Work the Land!

Work the Land!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who work the land and have plenty of bread. In Jesus’ name, amen.

There is a big distinction between those who work, and those who follow worthless pursuits. During the 1930’s when the United States experienced The Great Depression, my family members were hardworking farmers.

Proverbs 12:11 (ESV) says,

“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread,
but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.”

The farmers during the depression had food to eat even though it was during hard times.

The second part of the verse characterizes those who follow worthless pursuits. Consider those who, today, waste away hours playing video games. Others spend endless hours on social media. There are a thousand other pursuits that distract a person from working. If my farmer relatives did not sow, they would not have been able to reap.

Be on guard. Be productive. Work. Put bread on the table.

If you have been struggling to find appropriate employment, keep trying. The next contact could open the doors to success. Make sure to eliminate worthless pursuits. Don’t become one of those who is said to lack sense.

When Pride Comes, Then Comes Disgrace!

When Pride Comes, Then Comes Disgrace!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know when pride comes, then comes disgrace. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Pride can be person’s downfall. How serious is it?

Proverbs 11:2 (ESV) contrasts pride with humility.

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.”

If you have a problem with pride, it is time to change. Reject prideful thoughts, and humble yourself in the face of the Lord.

Accurate Weights and Measures!

Accurate Weights and Measures!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who use accurate weights and measures. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Fair trade is based on trust.

Exchanging by weight with balanced scales can be fair and honest. However, in ancient and modern times, some people have been known to cheat using scales that were out of balance.

The first part of Proverbs 11:1 (ESV) is about people who cheat with weights and measures.

“A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
but a just weight is his delight.”

People who hear this proverb will immediately know if they are guilty of using a false balance or using just weights.

How about you? Are you trustworthy when it comes to making fair exchanges?
