A Calm and Quiet Soul?

A Calm and Quiet Soul?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who have calmed and quieted their soul. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Imagine having your world turned upside down. Until a few weeks ago, people in Ukraine were going about their daily routines. Life changed. War broke out. Overnight, some left the country. Others became soldiers. Mothers huddled in subways with their children. People died. The war continues.

In Psalm 131:1-3 (ESV) we learn the psalmist had calmed and quieted his soul.

“Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.

O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.”

I do not know if people in war zones can be like the psalmist. Could anyone in these circumstances calm and quiet their soul?

In John 14:27 (ESV) Jesus is speaking. This may provide some comfort.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

Pray for the people of Ukraine. Pray for peace. Pray that in the midst of a world turned topsy-turvey, those in crisis will hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

Whatever your circumstances, can you turn to God and say, “I have calmed and quieted my soul.” Pray.

Cry Out for God?

Cry Out for God?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who cry out to you for help. In Jesus’ name, amen.

People can cry out the God for a million different reasons. It can be in desperation, in defeat, at a moment of loss, or in a crisis. Whatever the circumstances, God is aware.

Psalm 119:145-152 (ESV) begins with a whole hearted cry to the Lord.

“With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord!
I will keep your statutes.
I call to you; save me,
that I may observe your testimonies.
I rise before dawn and cry for help;
I hope in your words.
My eyes are awake before the watches of the night,
that I may meditate on your promise.
Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;
O Lord, according to your justice give me life.
They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;
they are far from your law.
But you are near, O Lord,
and all your commandments are true.
Long have I known from your testimonies
that you have founded them forever.”

Are you at a point where you are crying out to God? If not, consider approaching holy God with reverence and honor. If yes, you are crying out, I believe God led you to read this post. Jesus Christ said in John 14:6 (ESV), “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Will you trust his holy and inspired word? It is okay to cry out like the psalmist. Live expecting God to intervene in yours and other’s lives.

Set Free Those Doomed to Die?

Set Free Those Doomed to Die?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those you set free who were doomed to die. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Freedom. It is something that believers and followers of Jesus experience. Rather than being given the freedom to sin, greater freedom is from obeying God’s call upon one’s life.

Meant for future generations, Psalm 102:18-22 (ESV) was recorded to reach far beyond the present.

“Let this be recorded for a generation to come,
so that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord:
that he looked down from his holy height;
from heaven the Lord looked at the earth,
to hear the groans of the prisoners,
to set free those who were doomed to die,
that they may declare in Zion the name of the Lord,
and in Jerusalem his praise,
when peoples gather together,
and kingdoms, to worship the Lord.”

Will future generations know about how you became a believer and follower of Jesus? Record your testimony, so yet unborn children have a chance to come to know the risen Lord.

Sinking in the Mire?

Sinking in the Mire?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who feel like they are sinking in the mire. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever felt like you are sinking? Sinking deep into the mire? Some people find themselves in circumstances that seem hopeless.

Don Moen wrote a song, “God Will Make a Way.” The words are as follows:

“God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me”

David, the psalmist, asks God to make a way for him in Psalm 69:13-15 (ESV):

“But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
Deliver me
from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
and from the deep waters.
Let not the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or the pit close its mouth over me.”

David is praising God by the end of the psalm. Feel like all is lost? Stop.
Take a moment. Pray. Praise God for his provision.

Send Out Your Light and Your Truth?

Send Out Your Light and Your Truth?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who ask you to send out your light and your truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Early in Psalm 43, the psalmist requests help. He is under attack by the ungodly. He is facing the oppression of the enemy. Yet, even with this opposition, he choses to ask God to intervene. He has hope in God.

Psalm 43 (ESV):

“Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
against an ungodly people,
from the deceitful and unjust man
deliver me!

For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you rejected me?
Why do I go about mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?

Send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling!
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
O God, my God.

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.”

Never hesitate to ask God to intervene on your behalf. Realize even in face of insurmountable odds, God leads through his light and truth.

Don’t Give Up Hope?

Don’t Give Up Hope?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those have turmoil but still hope in God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

It is easier said than done to move from being in turmoil to having a hopeful, bright, and happy disposition.

For example, the psalmists in Psalm 42:8-11 wonders if God has forgotten him. He goes on to thrive and encourage others:

8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God, my rock:
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.”

By the end, the psalmist is filled with hope. Are you suffering and feeling cast down? Are you depressed? If necessary, look for help. Fear not, for the Lord is with you.
