A Divine Jail Break!

A Divine Jail Break!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are in jail. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The apostles were arrested because some were jealous of them for doing signs and wonders. God sent an angel to the rescue.

Luke tells what happened in Acts 5:17-21 (ESV):

“But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy, they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, ‘Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.’ And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.”

God had plans other than to leave the apostles in jail. In the morning, when a group went to get the prisoners, the prison was secure. God had arranged a divine jail break. Amazing! And the apostles were later found in the temple teaching.

Ever doubt God’s sovereignty? God worked in the lives of the apostles. He can work in your life too.

Replacing Judas Iscariot!

Replacing Judas Iscariot!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for church leaders as they select those who will serve. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Peter quoted from the Book of Psalms when it came to selecting a replacement for Judas Iscariot.

It says at the end of Acts 1:20 (ESV), “…Let another take his office.”

Not everyone would fit the strict criteria outlined in the verses that followed. The qualifications and the process are described in Acts 1:21-26.

“So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”

And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. ”

This section of scripture reminds us to be prayerful about selecting church leaders.

Picking qualified leaders among Christ-followers requires great discernment. Pray wise leaders who love Jesus will rise up.

Test the Spirits?

Test the Spirits?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom as believers test the spirits. In Jesus’ name, amen.

At the time of the early church, the truth of the Gospel taught by the apostles competed with false teachers spewing false doctrines. Because of these heresies, some of the faithful were pulled away. Fortunately, the epistles countered many of these attacks.

1 John 4:1 (ESV) provides a warning:

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

Pray to discern the truth. In matters of faith, don’t let a preacher’s or teacher’s personality and charisma become blinding.
