Howie’s Broken Hee-Haw

Howie’s Broken Hee-Haw

A few weeks ago, I came across a very fun-to-read children’s picture book. Howie’s Broken Hee-Haw by Josie Siler, illustrated by Sebastien Braun, will become an Easter and anytime classic.

Without giving away the story, just know that a little donkey has a special bray that Jesus appreciates.

Where do you find good books?

Do you visit the author’s website? Do you check the Amazon or Goodreads reviews? Does a radio show or podcast interview pique your interest that spurs you make a purchase?

I found out about Howie’s story through a friend. She told me she had heard about a good children’s book author, so I visited Josie Siler’s website. Somehow, I found a link to one about a podcast interview where she was the featured guest. During the interview, Ms. Siler read a short excerpt from her book. After that, I looked on Amazon and read the reviews.

I was so impressed with all I learned that I ordered two copies. One was for my collection and the other for the younger children in my family.

When one young child and I read the book aloud with the family present, everyone fell in love with the story.

I highly recommend this book.

It surely will make you smile.

Enjoy!

Sharon Norris Elliott Has Just Released Her Latest Book, Why I Get Into Trouble

Sharon Norris Elliott Has Just Released Her Latest Book, Why I Get Into Trouble

I give Why I Get Into Trouble a five star rating.

The story in Sharon’s children’s picture book is told in verse. It is engaging and well-written. The back of the book says,

“God has made us all special. He has also explained in his word, the Bible, what is right and what is wrong. The brother and sister in this book want to behave, but sometimes they are not being good. They would like to know why they get into trouble. Wouldn’t you like to know too?”

Why I Get Into Trouble is beautifully illustrated. To order the book on Amazon, look up Sharon Norris Elliott. When you order, be sure to get the book with the red “Trouble.”

I have known Sharon since March 2008. That year, she was a faculty member at Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference. I still remember how she taught a class on brainstorming book ideas. I have a vivid memory of the room where everyone wrote ideas on pieces of paper and posted them on the wall. In less than an hour, the project I was working on came to life.

Fast forward eleven years later to summer 2019. I had a zoom call with Sharon when she was teaching at SoCal Christian Writers Conference. In February 2021, I signed an agreement with Sharon’s AuthorizeMe Literary Agency. As my agent, Sharon arranged the deal for my series of seven children’s picture books with Elk Lake Publishing, Inc. in September 2021.

I Love to Write. I Love to Write Books. I Love to Write Children’s Books.

I Love to Write. I Love to Write Books. I Love to Write Children’s Books.

The last several weeks I have been working with a high performance coach. One task my coach assigned has led me learn more about my competition.

Months ago, before I ever landed my seven-book publishing contract, I did an exhaustive search of comparable titles related to my first book. This ended up being one section of the book proposal that won me the contract.

Yet, once I had my list of titles I thought I was finished, so I went on to work on other things.

My coach asked me to delve deeper in to the habits of the authors of successful children’s books.  I have looked at books, the author’s websites, and the book’s and author’s presence on Amazon. Integrating these has given me a new appreciation for the interrelationship between a book, the author’s website, and book marketing.

I am excited to report that this research project has reignited my desire to rise to the occasion and be the best children’s book author I can be. Researching and learning from other great authors, who are some of the best of the best in the business, is revolutionizing how I view serving those who will eventually buy my books.

All I needed was for my coach to point me in the right direction, and I was off and running.

Let me know if you have had a similar experience.

Where Did Your Dreams Come From?

Where Did Your Dreams Come From?

My dream of being able to visit places around the world started when I was a boy.

When I was growing up, my parents managed an apartment complex. I remember the owner, Ed Beaumont. He was a nice man who would come by to collect the tenant’s rents.

Ed and his wife were world travelers. Whenever they would go somewhere, they would make sure to send us a postcard. I was fascinated by the pictures. When I would see Mr. Beaumont, I asked questions about his trips and loved hearing about his adventures.

Once when Mr. Beaumont was going away for two weeks, he asked my mother and me to take care of his talking, double yellow-headed Amazon parrot. By the second week, his bird had learned to mimic the sound of our laughter. When he came to pick up his bird, he shared about his trip.

Across the alley from where we lived was a woman who also traveled internationally. One time, she invited my parents and me to come over to her home to see the slides her most recent trip. When the lights were turned low, I watched the screen come to life with pictures of historic places including the Holy Land. She told about her trip including the history of the places she visited. For me, it was like I was there. A few years ago, my wife and I fulfilled my dream when we visited Israel.

My dream of becoming a world traveler became a reality. How about you? Where did your dreams come from?

Never stop dreaming.
