No Other Gods Means No Other Gods!

No Other Gods Means No Other Gods!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know they should have no other gods before you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The first commandment is clear. Consider Exodus 20:3-4:

“‘You shall have no other gods before me.’

‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.’”

In Psalm 81:8-9 (ESV) the psalmist is reiterating that God will not tolerate false gods. Yet, the people of Israel at the time were very stubborn and wanted follow their own path.

“Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.”

Have you bowed to false gods in your life? Has some possession become more important than God? Has striving to achieve some goal become a higher priority than serving God?

Don’t be dismayed. God will forgive if you repent.

Remove all the other gods from your life starting now.

That We May Be Saved!

That We May Be Saved!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who pray for restoration and that we may be saved. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In Psalm 80 (ESV), the psalmist repeats an almost identical refrain in verses 3, 7, and 19.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!”

Verse 18 of the same Psalm responds to God and calls out to him:

“Then we shall not turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call upon your name!”

Immediately following this verse, the earlier refrain is repeated. Repeat out loud the words of verses 3, 7, and 19.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!”

Trust God to restore and save!

Teach Your Children Well!

Teach Your Children Well!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who do not hide the glorious deeds of the Lord from their children. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have you passed down any stories to the next generation? Over time, stories can change. Not so with scripture. Scribes and others who transcribed scripture had incredible attention to detail. In Israel, the Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls, including the Isaiah Scroll. The museum is one way Scripture is communicated to future generations.

The author of Psalm 78:1-8 (ESV) emphasizes the importance of sharing with children the glorious deeds of the Lord.

“Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.

He established a testimony in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God,
but keep his commandments;
and that they should not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
whose spirit was not faithful to God.”

Pass what you know about the Bible and God onto the next generation. Feel less than inadequate? Research, then share what you’ve learned. Pray, then share your personal testimony of what God has done in your life. You will be glad you did.

Meditate on God’s Mighty Deeds!

Meditate on God’s Mighty Deeds!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for all those who remember your wonders of old and meditate on your mighty deeds. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God is in the miracle business. When we think of all the signs and wonders in Egypt before pharaoh set the people free, there are many amazements to behold. Once the Israelites were out of captivity, those miracles that took place in both the desert and upon entering the Promised Land were passed down through the generations.

In Psalm 77:11-15 (ESV), the psalmist says he will meditate on God’s mighty deeds.

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
I will ponder all your work,
and meditate on your mighty deeds.
Your way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?
You are the God who works wonders;
you have made known your might among the peoples.
You with your arm redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

Think of all of God’s mighty deeds and pick one. Meditate on that one.

Go Tell It on the Mountain?

Go Tell It on the Mountain?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who give you thanks and recount your wondrous deeds. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Being thankful to God for all he does is one thing. Translating that thankfulness into an obedient life is another.

Psalm 75:1 (ESV) is about being thankful and also about sharing about all God has done.

“We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks, for your name is near.
We recount your wondrous deeds.”

Are you willing to share about the wondrous deeds God has done in your life? Why? Or, why not?

The song “Go Tell It on the Mountain” was written by John Wesley Work, Jr. The song begins,

“Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born”

If you are a believer, as you are given the opportunity, share the story of how knowing God changed your life. Do not delay. Go. Tell it.

In Control of the Universe!

In Control of the Universe!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know You are in control of the universe. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever doubt that God is control? He is in charge of everything.

The psalmist in Psalm 74:12-17 (ESV) gives some perspective on God’s sphere of influence.

“Yet God my King is from of old,
working salvation in the midst of the earth.
You divided the sea by your might;
you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters.
You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
You split open springs and brooks;
you dried up ever-flowing streams.
Yours is the day, yours also the night;
you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.
You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth;
you have made summer and winter.”

It is impossible to fathom the range of God’s influence. Yet, it is important to acknowledge he can be a personal God.

Do you know the God of the universe? Jesus is his son. God will answer if you call to him.
