Vow to the Lord!

Vow to the Lord!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who keep their vows to the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Hannah made a vow to the Lord. She asked the Lord for a child. She conceived and Samuel was born. After Samuel had been weaned, Hannah took him to the House of the Lord at Shiloh and made sacrifices. Then she brought him to Eli the priest.

1 Samuel 1:26-28 (ESV) tells what Hannah said when she presented Samuel to Eli.

“And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”

Hannah lent Samuel to the Lord.

As Samuel grew up, he would used by Lord as a prophet.

Giving Names!

Giving Names!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who are choosing names for their children. In Jesus name, amen.

In Psalm 139:13 (ESV), the psalmist is referring to God when he writes,

“For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”

In 1 Samuel 1:14-18 Hannah prayed for a child, and 1 Samuel 1:20 (ESV) explains what happened next.

“And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”

There is a note in the English Standard Version that explains the derivation of the name: “Samuel sounds like the Hebrew for heard of God.”

God answered Hannah’s prayer.

God knit together Samuel, and he knit us together.

Great Anxiety and Vexation!

Great Anxiety and Vexation!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for all those who have great anxiety and vexation. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Hannah had no children and according to 1 Samuel 1:14-18 (ESV) she was in distress. Eli, the priest, was sitting at the entrance to the temple when he observed her. At first, he thought she was drunk. After she explained, she came away with a blessing.

“And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” But Hannah answered, No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.’ Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.’ And she said, ‘Let your servant find favor in your eyes.’ Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.”

Eli encouraged Hanna. Eventually, she became pregnant with Samuel, and dedicated him to the Lord as she promised.

God’s timing is always perfect. If you are anxious and vexed, trust him with all of your heart.

Praise for the Proverbs 31 Wife!

Praise for the Proverbs 31 Wife!

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for men who praise their Proverbs 31 Wives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Beginning at Proverbs 31:10, the highest praise is given to one woman who is said in verse Proverbs 31:29 to “surpass them all.”

Yet, today, God has equipped women of faith with incredible ability.

This chapter is often read aloud to honor godly women who go above and beyond.

Proverbs 31:29-31 (ESV) includes the last verses in the book of Proverbs. These provide a capstone to all the other accomplishment and traits that characterize the Proverbs 31 wife.

“Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.”

Some men fail to express their gratitude even though they are blessed with a godly wife.

Men. Do not take for granted your spouse.

Read Proverbs 31:10-31 aloud to your wife, and praise the Lord for the gift he has given you.

Call Her Blessed!

Call Her Blessed!

Dear Lord, I pray for the woman whose children rise up and call her blessed. In Jesus’ name amen.

A woman who exemplifies virtue and is a model of excellence is described in Proverbs 31. Women like this are often referred to as Proverbs 31 Wives.

Proverbs 31:27-28 (ESV) offers a description of this woman.

“She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:”

Not only is this woman active, her family sings her praise.

Others should follow her example.

She Opens Her Mouth with Wisdom!

She Opens Her Mouth with Wisdom!

Dear Lord, I pray for women who open their mouths with wisdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When Scripture refers to a person speaking with wisdom, readers take notice.

In this instance, the book of Proverbs includes a discussion of what has become known as the Proverbs 31 Wife.

Proverbs 31:25-26 (ESV) delves into more characteristics of this godly person.

“Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

Conveying confidence, this woman says wise things and demonstrates kindness.
