Team Building?

Team Building?

Lord, I pray for wisdom for people who work in teams. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The first verses of Matthew are filled with often hard-to-pronounce names in Jesus’ genealogy.

Chapter three of Nehemiah is also filled with some hard-to-pronounce names.

The latter lists the people who worked to build the wall and the gates of Jerusalem under Nehemiah’s leadership. In Scripture we learn this endeavor was not a solo effort. To complete the massive reconstruction project took a number of teams.

Are you part of a team? It takes cooperation. Keep on building. And it helps the camaraderie if you know how to pronounce your teammates’ names.

Are You Prepared?

Are You Prepared?

I pray for wisdom for those who need to be prepared for an attack. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ever learn that someone is out to get you? How did you prepare?

In the fourth chapter of Nehemiah we learn that teams of builders were working on Jerusalem’s wall when word came that opposition forces were plotting to disrupt the construction.

It says in Nehemiah 4:8 (ESV): “And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it.” The response? Prayer.

Verse 9 says: “And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.”

Then, reinforcements – although at first reluctant – arrived. And, equipped with spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail, they prepared to protect the workers.

Are you a wall builder? Are you called to protect others? In whatever capacity, be prepared! Serve with distinction.

Who, Me? Be Strong and Courageous?

Who, Me? Be Strong and Courageous?

Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who need to be reminded to be strong and courageous. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Being strong not only implies being physically able, but strong can also mean having mental toughness.

That’s what it means in the first chapter of Joshua, where God has to tell Joshua more than once what he requires.

He says in Joshua 1:6 (ESV): “Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.”
In verse 9, God repeats his command:, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Being strong and courageous is not just for Joshua. Take action. Be strong and courageous from now on.

The National Day of Prayer: The Formula for Success?

The National Day of Prayer: The Formula for Success?

Lord, I pray for wisdom for people who strive to be successful. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Is there a formula for success in Scripture? God told Moses’ successor, Joshua, in Joshua 1:8 (ESV), “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success.”

Start today! Find a verse. A short one will work. You could take a verses from one of the Wisdom Prayers. Learn it. Ponder how it applies to your life. Tell me what you think below.

From False Gods to Jesus

From False Gods to Jesus

From False Gods to Jesus.

I became fascinated with Asian religions while taking a high school religious studies class.

About that time, I stopped attending church. This was no small thing. I had been confirmed in the Lutheran church, attended Sunday school regularly for more than a decade, and even officiated during the first half of an actual church service. Others thought I would make a good pastor. I, too, considered becoming one.

Later, in a religions class at college, I was given an assignment to make up my own religion. I assume the teacher wanted us students to prove we could apply what was taught in class. I called my new religion “Universal Abstractionism.” My view was that all religious paths lead to the mountain top of enlightenment. I went on to receive a degree in Religious Studies.

Unfortunately, I believed the same lie as Eve – the false promise that I could become like God. Later, I started telling people, “I believe in Hinduism.” I wore a chain and medallion around my neck with an Om symbol. My goal was to be one with God. I thought this was possible if I worked and meditated hard enough.

For twenty years, I put my faith in false gods and even worshiped at the feet of an idol. I tried everything to fill what Blaise Pascal called the “God-shaped vacuum” in my heart. I danced at a Hare Krishna Temple, chanted the Buddhist chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, and practiced other forms of eastern meditation.

God saved me when Diane, whom I later married, gave me a small Four Spiritual Laws tract, and I prayed the short prayer written near the back.

God rescued me from a life of works-based religious bondage. I was free of trying to follow the lies that all paths lead to enlightenment, and that I could be like God. I put my trust in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You can, too.

Join me as we pray for wisdom in my daily prayer challenge.

Me? Say Hello?

Me? Say Hello?

Lord, I pray for wisdom for people as they greet others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Some avoid eye contact. Others seem unapproachable. Then there are those who offer a pleasant greeting.

Paul greets his readers warmly when he writes in Ephesians 1:2 (ESV): “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Imagine being with a group of first century believers, and you could understand the language as you hear this letter read out loud.

The way this is written, it is a blessing.

How we greet others can change everything for those we encounter.

Greet others with joy.
