Is He Your Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer?

Is He Your Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who trust God to be their rock, fortress, and deliverer. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The God of the Old Testament delivered his people from Egypt. God then led his people into the Promised Land. When King David’s God, the same God, saved him from Saul’s wrath, he wrote Psalm 18:1-3:

“I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.”

God had power far beyond what we could ask for or expect. Let us take time to praise his name for saving us from our real and imagined enemies. Please give praise. Now.

Are You the Apple of His Eye?

Are You the Apple of His Eye?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know they are the apple of his eye.

In A Hog on Ice & Other Curious Expressions we learn that the apple of your eye is the pupil. The book goes on to say that injury to the pupil can cause blindness. The notes in the English Standard Version also explain the expressing that is a “colorful biblical term for the pupil.”

King David writes in Psalm 17:8-9 (ESV):

“Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,

from the wicked who do me violence,
my deadly enemies who surround me.”

King David wants the Lord to always keep him in view. We need to ask the Lord to do the same for us. The notes in English Standard Version go on to say that “Shadow of your wings always refers to a place of safety.”

Ask the Lord to keep you as the apple of his eye. Praise God he see you. Ask to God to keep you in the shadow of his wings. Say safe and God bless you.

Not be Shaken?

Not be Shaken?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know they shall not be shaken. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Want to have the confidence that Almighty God is at work? According to the notes about this verse in the ESV, Peter, during his speech on Pentecost, cites Psalm 16:8-11 (ESV):

“I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.

You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

This uplifting section of Scripture comes with a promise that we will never be separated from God.

When we acknowledge God is at work in our lives it is possible to feel secure even when hard times come.

Where were you on the day of the attack on the World Trade Center?
What changed for you the days and weeks that followed?

Here is my answer:
Forty miles outside of Barstow, California, in the Mojave Desert, the phone rang…

– My wife said, “Turn on your TV.”
– I did…

The first tower was on fire. After a quick conversation, we hung up.

Within a few minutes a second plane crashed into the other tower.
I called my wife…

We were both horrified…

Five weeks before the attack, I started working for Barstow College’s satellite campus at Fort Irwin, the National Training Center for the United States Army. Hired to teach public speaking and English to the soldiers and their dependents, I would describe pre-9/11 Fort Irwin as a quiet town. My students took a casual approach to learning. Often, they came to class exhausted after taking part in military training exercises in the summer heat.

Post-9/11

When classes finally resumed, my students were still tired, but they arrived for class early. Many leaned forward during lectures and student speeches. Members of small groups interacted with greater enthusiasm. A sense of urgency filled the air. After 9/11 my students realized they were part of something bigger. America had been attacked, and they were the defenders of freedom.

It didn’t take long for me to realize my responsibility. I became serious about teaching the up-and-coming generation of military leaders. I did my best to help them improve their oral and written communication skills. My students would tell me that something I taught on a given day proved helpful to them in their jobs the next.

At Fort Irwin, everyone’s attitude and demeanor changed after the attacks on the World Trade Center. I am humbled to have taught at the satellite campus until May 2008. I continued teaching for the college at the Barstow campus until June 2017.

Need Counsel?

Need Counsel?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know the Lord gives counsel. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have you ever had the feeling that God is answering your prayer about what to do in a particular situation? How about in the middle of the night?

The psalmist tells us in Psalm 16:7 (ESV):

“I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.”

Are you listening for the Lord’s counsel? Trust that God is a good communicator. Listen. Especially at night.

Pure Words?

Pure Words?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who realize the Lord’s words are pure. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In ancient times, silver was considered so valuable that in Genesis 37:28 (ESV) we find the story of Joseph being sold by his brothers into slavery for an amount of silver.

“Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.”

Refining silver involves heating it until it is molten and then removing the impurities.

Psalms 12:6 (ESV) compares God’s word to highly refined silver:

“The words of the Lord are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.”

Let us never take for granted the value of the Lord’s pure words.

Joshua 1:8 (ESV) says to meditate on it day and night.
