What Prospectors and Writers Have In Common: Eureka!

Eureka!

What Prospectors and Writers Have In Common.

Have you studied the rich history of the California Gold Country? James Marshall found gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848. Soon after, people from around the world came to the region.

Johann August Sutter, better known as John Sutter, had his Fort in what would later become Sacramento, California. My wife, Diane, and I were on a trip in northern California on our way to the Gold Country when we stopped by the Fort.

We were looking for and found a large tree with a small plaque inside the Fort’s front gate. The plaque explained how the tree originally came from the city of Kandern, Germany, where Sutter was born. Diane lived in Kandern where she taught three years at Black Forest Academy. While there, she heard the story about the tree from her landlord who owned a nursery. Prior to World War II, the people of Kandern sent a sapling as a peace offering, and it was planted at the Fort. My wife and I also visited the house where Johann August Sutter was born in Kandern. We saw the small plaque identifying it as his birthplace.

As our trip continued, we explored the Gold Country. I could feel the excitement of the early prospectors. As a writer, I identify with those known as the 49ers, who arrived in 1849. Prospectors and writers are dreamers. Prospectors and writers are optimistic. Prospectors and writers work hard. The prospector looked to find gold. Writers are constantly on the lookout for a golden idea.

Both prospectors and writers define success when they use the word, “Eureka,” I Found It! Prospectors hope to strike it rich. Writers look for just the right word or phrase, the perfect main character, a great villain, a solid supporting cast, and the perfect story arch. Meanwhile, nonfiction writers try to tell a true story in the most captivating way.

When everything is going well, it is a great joy. Yet, when faced with disappointment, both prospectors and writers have a choice. They can keep searching, keep going, and never give up. Or they can stop.

If you identify with either the prospector or the writer, never stop in your quest to one day shout, “Eureka!”

God Bless King David?

God Bless King David?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who ask God to bless others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

According to the notes in the New English Standard Version, God’s people originally sang this Psalm for King David. The words of Psalm 20:1-5 (ESV) remind us of the amazing power of God to be there when we need him most. Image singers singing:

“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary
and give you support from Zion!
May he remember all your offerings
and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah

May he grant you your heart’s desire
and fulfill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over your salvation,
and in the name of our God set up our banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!”

Be encouraged as this Psalm ministers to your soul. King David was a man after God’s own heart. His petitions would have agreed with God’s plan. What if someone prayed these things for you? How might you act differently?

Acceptable to God?

Acceptable to God?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those want the words of their mouth and the meditation of their heart to be acceptable to God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Over the last several decades, language on television and in other media has noticeably become more profane. Unfortunately, even the faithful stumble in this area. Psalm 19:14 (ESV) is a familiar verse that can be used to turn away from the filthy language and other sin. It will prepare a person to be in God’s presence.

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

Think deeply about this verse. It is a fitting prayer. Will you take time to pray right now?

Blameless Before God?

Blameless Before God?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who want to be blameless before God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Believers want to worship and praise God. They also want to avoid sin. Yet, sometimes a person is clueless as to something that may be offensive to God. We hear the psalmist’s concern in Psalm 19:12-13 (ESV):

“Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.”

Ask the Lord to keep you blameless. If a sin comes to mind, repent.

The Lord’s Law Is Perfect?

The Lord’s Law Is Perfect?

Dear Lord, I pray for the wisdom to recognize that the law of the Lord is perfect.

Notice what writers call the parallel structure of this section of God’s holy and inspired word. Several of the phrases start with the same word (i.e. The). David, the psalmist, helps us to understand how he regards the Lord’s law and the Lord himself when we read Psalm 19:7-11:

“The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.”

Take a moment and reflect on what David thinks of God’s laws and who he says God is. Do you have the same intense feelings? Why? Or why not? Does something need to change?

Are You Surefooted?

Are You Surefooted?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who realized the Lord can make them surefooted. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Hind’s Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard has been compared to John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. Both books are allegories about a believer’s journey. The title of Hannah Hurnard’s book is based on Psalm 18:33. Compare these two translations:

Psalm 18:33 (KJV)

“He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.”

Psalm 18:33 (ESV)

“He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.”

Psalm 18:34-36 (ESV) provide perspective.

“He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand supported me,
and your gentleness made me great.
You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.”

May God help you walk confidently. God can help you to become surefooted when the only things around you are rocks and crags. Trust God!
