National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) Starts Today!

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) Starts Today!

TEvery November, tens of thousands of people accept the challenge to write a 50,000-word novel during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

I exceed the 50,000-word goal on two different occasions. For example, during November, 2020, I was not alone. That year, I was part of a weekly support group that met to provide affirming encouragement. We shared our progress, discussed how to overcome setbacks, and rejoiced as we celebrated victories. That year our group logged over 350,000 total words.

Want to accept the challenge? Here are a few tips that may make your dream of writing a novel in a month become a reality.

  1. Know what kind of writer you are: So-called plotters plan in advance. They create character sketches, write detailed outlines, and do extensive research before writing their novel. In contrast, so-called pantsers simply write by the seat of their pants. They start with an idea and write. Most people are hybrids.
  2. Focus on getting the story written then get it right. Many people are perfectionists. Don’t become distracted. Make your NaNoWriMo goal to create the first draft. Wait until December to start editing.
  3. Do not get derailed. Make a notation or add an asterisk to indicate more information is needed. Search the asterisks in December and make the corrections then.
  4. Write every day. November has thirty days, so an author needs to average 1,667 words every day.
  5. Dictate! Open an email. Address it to yourself. Find the microphone and start transcribing the text you want. When finished dictating, send the file to yourself. Open the email. Copy the text to a word or Scrivener document and edit. Then count the words as part of your word count for the day.
  6. Silence the critics. Do not listen to the internal voices that can sabotage creativity and zap motivation. Do not listen to naysayers. Manage the self-talk and negativity. Zero in on the task of writing.
  7. Sitting at the keyboard and nothing is happening? Free writing can jumpstart the creative juices. Start writing anything. Write about the day. What was for breakfast? It often takes a few minutes. Once warmed up, get back to writing the story.
  8. Do not give up!
  9. The NaNoWriMo website (https://nanowrimo.org)provides a way to track daily word count totals. Sign in and customize your page. Read the encouraging emails from those involved in the challenge.
  10. Earn a certificate if you sign in, log in your progress every day, and reach 50,000 words. Plan to frame your certificate. Did I say sign in every day before 12:00 midnight.

Get motivated, get inspiration, and write.

Have fun. You are not alone.

Don’t Give Up Hope?

Don’t Give Up Hope?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those have turmoil but still hope in God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

It is easier said than done to move from being in turmoil to having a hopeful, bright, and happy disposition.

For example, the psalmists in Psalm 42:8-11 wonders if God has forgotten him. He goes on to thrive and encourage others:

8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God, my rock:
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.”

By the end, the psalmist is filled with hope. Are you suffering and feeling cast down? Are you depressed? If necessary, look for help. Fear not, for the Lord is with you.

Is Your Soul Cast Down?

Is Your Soul Cast Down?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for the miserable and depressed. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Even in the face of misery and depression a believer can have hope. Moreover, when a person of faith is said to be down, he or she can also praise God.

In Psalm 42:5-7 (ESV) we hear the psalmist’s words:

“Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.”

Depression can be debilitating. It can be addressed with talk therapy. Some need medication. If you need help, seek and you shall find. Read tomorrow’s wisdom prayer, or open a Bible to Psalm 42 to find out what happens to the psalmist.

As The Dear Pants for Water?

As The Dear Pants for Water?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who pursue you, O God, like a deer pants for water. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Pets are big business. The care and feeding of them is a multibillion dollar industry. Animal lovers are more familiar with dogs and cats panting than with deer. Yet, an animal that is thirsty, no matter the kind, brings to mind an image of one desperate for a drink.

Psalm 42:1-4 (ESV) is more than about a thirsty deer:

“As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
‘Where is your God?’
These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
a multitude keeping festival.”

Are you desperate for a drink of living water? Are you willing to prioritize time with God the same way a thirsty animal desires water. If so, open scripture and be refreshed.

Consider the Poor?

Consider the Poor?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who consider the poor. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Great resources are devoted to helping those who are less fortunate. Many faith-based initiatives and aid workers help those with food insecurity, housing, and a host of other goods and services.

Psalm 41:1 has a note in the English Standard Version that makes reference to the word “poor,” and indicates the word “weak” can be substituted.

Psalm 41:1-2 follows:

“Blessed is the one who considers the poor!
In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him;
the Lord protects him and keeps him alive;
he is called blessed in the land;
you do not give him up to the will of his enemies.
The Lord sustains him on his sickbed;
in his illness you restore him to full health.”

Amazing how the Lord will protect, sustain, and restore those who are God’s hands and feet to the poor.

Great is the Lord?

Great is the Lord?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for all who say. “Great is the Lord.” In Jesus’ name, amen.

Scripture has several examples of those who humble themselves and seek the Lord. For example, Matthew 7:7 (ESV) is one well-known verse:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

Psalm 40:16-17 (ESV) also refers to those seeking the Lord:

“But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
say continually, ‘Great is the Lord!’
As for me, I am poor and needy,
but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
do not delay, O my God!”

The very idea that God thinks about us is amazing. Hebrews 2:6 (ESV) tells us:

“It has been testified somewhere, ‘What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?’”

Praise God for he is great. He is mindful of mankind. He is mindful of you. Seek him.
