A Day in Your Courts?

A Day in Your Courts?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Charlie Hall wrote “Better Is One Day.” The song is based on Psalm 84:10, and it is on YouTube.

Psalm 84:10-12 (ESV) offers examples of comparison and contrast and concludes with a statement about who is blessed.

“I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
O Lord of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!”

Would you rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God? Where do you put your trust? It is time to trust God. Pray.

Heart and Flesh Sing for Joy?

Heart and Flesh Sing for Joy?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those whose heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Imagine a group of believers singing for joy in church.
In contrast, imagine a stadium filled with people singing along with the-latest-and-greatest popular, secular musicians.

Both may make pleasant melodies, but those worshiping God have a spiritual component those in the secular stadium are missing.

In Psalm 84:1-4 (ESV) the psalmist says his heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.

“How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.

Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever singing your praise! Selah

Are you as dedicated as the psalmist? Does your heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God? Why? Or why not? Do you know the living God? If not, read The Four Spiritual Laws.

No Other Gods Means No Other Gods?

No Other Gods Means No Other Gods?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who know they should have no other gods before you. In Jesus name, amen.

The first commandment is clear. Consider Exodus 20:3-4:

“‘You shall have no other gods before me.

“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.’”

In Psalm 81:8-9 the psalmist is reiterating that God will not tolerate false gods. Yet, the people of Israel at the time were very stubborn and wanted follow their own path.

“Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.”

Have you bowed to false gods in your life? Has some possession become more important than God? Has striving to achieve some goal become a higher priority than serving God?

Don’t be dismayed. God will forgive if you repent. Perhaps it is time someone said welcome home to all those who need to remove all other gods from their life. Prioritize.

Saved From Burnout: The Great Teachers Seminar

Saved From Burnout: The Great Teachers Seminar

In the summer of 2014, I attended the life-changing Great Teachers Seminar offered by the Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges.

To this day, I recall how I transitioned from near burnout to an instructor on fire. I found that I loved my field of speech communication, and that I loved teaching.

Like a lot of participants, I went expecting to hear the best-of-the-best teachers share their expertise. I planned to soak in the lectures and take a few days off in Santa Barbara.

I was shocked to learn there were no seasoned professionals who would be giving lecturers. No so-called “great teachers” to pass on their wisdom.

Something else rather refreshing happened. As the assembled group of between thirty and forty college instructors started getting to know each other, we changed ever so slowly.

The first few days, each instructor gave a short, prepared excerpt of their finest lecture. Along with the others, I realized how much talent there was in the room. I was impressed with my colleagues.

During breakout sessions, a topic was provided, and a veteran of the seminar helped moderate. Otherwise, the content was an exchange of peers sharing ideas. For example, one woman with a Ph.D. in Psychology talked about her students learning to be resilient.

Looking back at my notes, I recall the instructor telling us about her family history. She explained how people can have the same parents and grow up in the same situation, yet one gets a Ph.D. while a sibling repeats the drug addiction and poverty of the previous generation. She earned the Ph.D. while her siblings followed in her parent’s footsteps. This great teacher’s mission was to help her students become resilient.

At one point during the Seminar, I was given a chance to moderate a breakout session on the topic of burnout. The assembled group and I exchanged ideas and ways to rejuvenate. That session generated a list of ways to refresh oneself and help avoid burnout. The list included get a massage, listen to music, take a day off, swim, walk, go to the gym, take a nap, use aroma therapy, volunteer, talk to a friend, or get talk therapy.

By the last day of the seminar, I had a completely new toolbox of ideas and strategies. My self-confidence restored, together with the rest of the faculty members who attended the Great Teachers Seminar, I left knowing that I was indeed a great teacher.

That We May Be Saved?

That We May Be Saved?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who pray for restoration and that we may be saved. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The psalmist in Psalm 80 (ESV) the psalmist repeats an almost identical refrain in verses 3, 7, and 19.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved!”

Verse 18 of the same Psalm responds to God and calls out to him.

“Then we shall not turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call upon your name!”

Immediately following this verse, the earlier refrain is repeated.

Repeat out loud the words of verses 3, 7, and 19. Trust God to restore and save.

Teach Your Children Well?

Teach Your Children Well?

Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom for those who do not hide the glorious deeds of the Lord from their children. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Have you passed down any stories to the next generation? Over time, stories can change. Not so with scripture. Scribes and others who transcribed scripture had incredible attention to detail. In Israel, the Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls including the Isaiah Scroll. The museum is one way Scripture is preserved and communicated to future generations.

The author of Psalm 78:1-8 (ESV) emphasizes the importance of sharing with children the glorious deeds of the Lord.

“Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.

He established a testimony in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God,
but keep his commandments;
and that they should not be like their fathers,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not steadfast,
whose spirit was not faithful to God.”

Pass what you know about the Bible and God on to the next generation. Feel less than inadequate? Research, then share what you learn. Pray and share your personal testimony of what God has done in your life. You will be glad you did.
